Chemistry 25a

Organic Chemistry I, June 2000

This course will deal with the structure of organic molecules, chemistry of hydrocarbons, alkyl halides, alcohols and ethers, stereochemistry, and energy profiles. The content will use material from general chemistry as a foundation, and both problem sets and exams will be cumulative.

Classes:
Classes meet on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, 9-11am, in Volen 106.

Schedule:
See attached sheet.

Instructor:
Martin A. Walker, visiting professor from Johnson State College, VT.
Extension 62582(lab), 62523(office).
Email: walker@brandeis.edu (on Binah) OR
walkerm@badger.jsc.vsc.edu
Office hours:
For one hour, immediately after class, in the organic lab office (Kalman 205, X 62582). Outside of this time (i.e. for urgent matters), I may be found in Edison-Lecks 107 (X62523) or Edison-Lecks 318 (X62521).

Text:
"Organic Chemistry", Wade (4th edition), Prentice Hall, New Jersey.
Also Darling molecular model kit for organic chemistry.
Optional: "ChemTV" CD-ROM.

Information:
I hope (time allowing) to put practice material on the web at http://syngen2.chem.brandeis.edu/~walker/chem25a.htm.
Also, I will use email whenever I need to contact you between classes, so please check your email. If you have a problem with this, let me know.

Grading:
The final grade will be based upon a combination of five problem sets (6% each), two hour exams (15% each) and a final exam (40%).

Honesty:
Any work you submit as an individual should be your own work; copied material from family, friends, textbooks or the internet will be given a zero grade and may lead to disciplinary action. It is understood that some work does involve a collaborative effort, particularly in the lab; however even here you should use your own words to present the group's conclusions in your individual report.

Disabilities:
If you are a student with a documented disability on record at Brandeis University and wish to have a reasonable accommodation made for you in this class, please see me immediately.

Remember:
I am here to help! If you are struggling with any aspects of the course, or you are feeling overwhelmed, feel free to approach me (before it's too late!), and I will do my best in lending my support.
