Chemistry 29a

Organic Chemistry I Lab, June 2000

This course will support the Organic Chemistry I lecture course. It will provide a foundation in basic laboratory techniques used in organic chemistry, as well as experiments which illustrate material covered in Chem 25a.

Time:
Lab sessions are held in the organic chemistry teaching laboratory (Kalman building), on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00-5:30 pm.

Schedule:
See attached sheet.

Instructor:
Martin A. Walker, visiting professor from Johnson State College, VT.
Extension 62582(lab), 62523(office).
Email: walker@brandeis.edu (on Binah) OR
walkerm@badger.jsc.vsc.edu
Office hours:
During lab, in the organic lab office (Kalman 205, X62582). Also, M, Tu, Th, F from 11:10 am - noon in the organic lab office (I may be later if detained after class in G-Zang 121). Outside of this time (i.e. for urgent matters), I may be found in Edison-Lecks 107 (X62523) or Edison-Lecks 318 (X62521).

Text:
"Macroscale and Microscale Organic Experiments", Williamson (3rd edition), Houghton Mifflin.

Information:
I hope (time allowing) to put practice material on the web at http://syngen2.chem.brandeis.edu/~walker/chem29a.htm.
Also, I will use email whenever I need to contact you between classes, so please check your email. If you have a problem with this, let me know.

Grading:
The final grade will be based upon a combination of nine lab reports (9% each) and a final exam (19%).

Honesty:
Any work you submit as an individual should be your own work; copied material from family, friends, textbooks or the internet will be given a zero grade and may lead to disciplinary action. It is understood that some work does involve a collaborative effort, particularly in the lab; however even here you should use your own words to present the group's conclusions in your individual report.

Absences You are required to attend every session. If you need to be absent from any lab session, you must supply either a medical note from a doctor, or a note from the dean giving an acceptable reason for your absence.

Disabilities:
If you are a student with a documented disability on record at Brandeis University and wish to have a reasonable accommodation made for you in this class, please see me immediately.

Remember:
I am here to help! If you are struggling with any aspects of the course, or you are feeling overwhelmed, feel free to approach me (before it's too late!), and I will do my best in lending my support.
